Hi Guys, welcome to Vintage Velos - the Youtube channel and website that is all about vintage bikes - how they ride, how they are made, settups, builds and opinions, plus vintage bicycle events, races and just riding cool vintage bikes!
I`m guessing you all know my name by now, I`m Dan, a guy just who loves anything to do with cool vintage bikes - especially hard to track down ex team bikes and historical bikes, but pretty much anything which catches my eye - steel, ally and carbon, they are all good, just not a fan of matt black carbon...
Here at Vintage Velo we do a stack of vintage bike videos - either scroll down and check them out or use the quicklinks to the right to jump to area you want.
Its no fake claim to say the Pinerello Dyna Banesto team bikes made by the master frame builder Dario Pegoretti are the peak of steel frame development - here we take an all original `95 Banesto team bike ridden by legendary climber Jimenez out for a blast!
Back in the day Zeus took on the might of Colnago and Campagnolo with there impressive Zeus 2000 - but how does it stack up to a Colango Super on the road - watch and find out!
Yates, the Animal (a nickname for good reason) - here we ride his ex Motorola team bike with original super bad tough gearing and tackle a serious climb - just as its going wrong we spot a rider up the road that just has to be pulled in...!
In preparation for the `24 L`Eroica in Tuscany we are starting to prepare a late 1920`s English 3 speed racer - most likly a Russ though can`t be sure - though for sure the hubs shot, the gearing is terrible and the brake (just the one) could let go at any moment - what could possibly go wrong...
Wow, check out this ex Sky Dogma wridden by Sir Bradley Wiggins in the early 2012 season - an awesome Dogma Think 2.1 in Brads national champs colours with full first edition Shimano D12 - how dous it ride? Epic!
A seriuosly rare and exclusive 1979/80 season De Rosa (made by the hands of Ugo De Rosa himself) Moser Sanson team bike ridden by Francesco Mosers key domestique Leonardo Mazzantini - how does this epic vintage bike one ride? Off the chart!
Man alive, Sean Yates real deal 7-Eleven team bike - just epic - he only had one per year and this is his from 1990 and its just a mad bike to ride!
OK, so here we have a fake Pinarello Dogma - we are not here to judge the issues of wether you should buy a fake, just to compare how a fake Dogma rides in comparison to the real deal (lets not forget there are loads of fake Dogmas out there so unbiased knowledge is everything - conclusion at the end of the video...
Blimey, this has to be the most extreme bike I`ve ever sat accross - and the only bike Lance Armstrong ever feared - Yan Ullrichs Giant branded hand built Walser time trial bike - just how hard is it to ride?
Every collection has to have a steel framed Celeste blue Bianchi in the stable - and just check out this glorious ex Gatorade `92 Bianchi TSX - just glorious - and wait until we talk about how it rides...
The legends of Stephen Roche need no introduction - here we have one of his Carrera team mates original Battaglin team bikes - as ridden by top sprinter Guido Bontempi and fitted with c-record throughout including those stunning Delta brakes:
Just love this bike - a mid `70`s Lejeune special order crit racer, rebuilt in the early `80`s with all the trick parts available at the time - check out the chainrings!
Cavendish - the sprint king needs no introduction here, and just check out this crazy stiff `09 HTC team bike ridden by the man himself in the year he took 6 Tour De France stage wins!!!
Marco Pantani - the finset climber ever - we pretty much worship the guy here, and here we have a re-creation of his `98 Mercatone Uno liveried Bianchi Megapro with full Campagnolo Record groupset - and its just the best fun ride you can get (and kit looks soooo cool!
Alas not one of Lance Armstrongs bikes (one day...) but here we ride a great looking `99 Trek OCLV in classic metalic blue with all the Race Lite goodies!
Ah, Richard Virenque, one of France`s finest climbers ever with a record 7 Tour de France King of the Mountains classifications, and here we ride his `92 TVT and its a pretty rapid machine!
Now this yellow peril is Team Once TT bike from `03/`04, based on an ally Giant TCR with additional frame fillets welded in place to stiffen up and already stiff ally frame!
Ah, if your looking for a great vintage steel bike just get hold of a Colnago - they have pretty much never made a bad bike and this classic Colnago Super with full Campagnolo Record groupset is just a gem....
So we built this vintage `63 Legnano up from a frame/fork with L`Eroica Tuscany in mind - so bigger tyres, great brakes and reliabilty were foremost but it still has to ride great...
Got to be honest, we love the way early TVT`s ride - the classic carbon tubes bonded to ally lugs just feel great and fast - so just check out the last in the line - a real deal Cofidis team bike ridden in 2010, sure, its small but its awesome...
RMO were a huge team back in the day, and this steel framed Gitane is from the `92 season and ridden by Dante Rezze, key Domestic to Charley Mottet - its a great frame but we`re not convince by the Mavic groupset and had to swop out thebrakes as they are just plain dangerous!
OK, if there`s one vintage bike event you must do at least once in your life its L`Eroica Tuscany (sure, there are L`Eroica licensed events around the world but Tuscany is the hoe and by far the best - hills, climbing, Strada Bianchi gravel, 100`s of vintage bike riders and just dripping in style...
OK, so no vintage bike events where you are? No problem, grab a vintage bike off the wall and just go for it - you`ll never stop being amazed at just how fast, if not faster and vintage bike is compared with modern carbon bikes - in this one we take on the Kent Classic on Richard Virenques ex RMO TVT team bike - easy!
OK, so modern bikes are so much faster, right? Hell no, in this video we take a super cool vintage Mercatone Uno Pantani Bianchi Megapro to a hotly contested Strava KOM - how does it go - better than expected...
OK, so the Pantani Bianchi did pretty darned well on the Strava KOM, so lets repeat the same climb but on an old school steel framed vintage bike - a `63 Legnano with Canpagnolo groupset - super cool bike but how does it do on the KOM segment?
The bikeforum challenge was to spend $100 on a vintage bike then complete a 100km ride - how hard can it be? In part one we do the challenge - second video we repeat the challenge having lavished time and money on the bike and then see just what difference it makes on the road!
Antique bikes - we are talking `20`s/`30`s old school tech - they can be a real challenge as the parts are weird and often made in a shed by the manufacturer at the time. Here we pull one apart, check and sort everything and rebuild it into a really good riding antique bike that doesn`t try and throw me off this time....
Here`s a seriously cool late `70`s Spanish Zeus super bike - designed to be a better frame than Colnago and a better groupset than Campagnolo - we`ll have to see how that works out...
Now this is a really drop dead gorgeous and historiv bike - a Battaglin steel frame and forks used by the Carrera team and ridden by top sprinter Guido Bontempi (plus he wore the yellow jersey riding this bike) - bare vintage bike frame build up with ful C-Record groupset and Fir rims.
OK, we`ve all done it - you`ve just bought a vintage bike and put some air in the tyres and jump on for a ride - maybe set it up first...
Richard Virenque - a record 7 Tour King of the Mountains jersies to his name, in this video we build up his `92 RMO TVT team bike with Mavic groupset (and a few Dura Ace components which are just better)...
This is the final build up of the three part video series we did on this vintage French Bertin race bike (check the youtube channel for the first two parts) - the frame has been painted and its time to re-assemble the Shimano 600 groupset and count the costs...
Some vintage bikes are just cool - and this one is super cool - a mid `70`s vintage Lejeune race bike, re-built in the early `80`s as club racer with all the go fast parts available at the time - just check out that chainset!!!
Sean Yates - a true legend and tough man of the professional race scene, not to mention director sportive to the likes of Wiggins and Contador - here we chat with Sean about his time in the pro peleton - just how intimidating was Hinault (a lot), how hard was the ride that earny him the yellow jersey at the `94 Tour de France and loads more...
Motor doping in the pro peleton - its a hot topic of discussion and wild accusations at the moment - but its just not a thing - don`t believe me? Watch and discuss...
Every article you read says that modern low pressure tyres are the way to go on a race bike - but are they? These reviews are paid for by the tyre and wheel industry so you have keep an open mind - in this video we put a vintage Bianchi with skinny 23mm tyres up against a modern Cervelo with 32mm tyres - which feels better???
OK, your worst knightmare when riding - something on your bike collapses and end in a spectacular crash - often its the stem and the term "Death Stem" has been used for years, since the `70`s Ava death stem started sheering in two - in this video we take a cloase look at which parts to avoid and how to check what you have - not a video if you are of a nervous disposition...
You`ve picked up a vintage bike and it needs a lot of work - the paint needs attention - should you strip it and repaint or just touch up the paint - lets take a look and see...
Dopng - le dopage... its been going on in cycling since the first prize money was awarded - here we take an honest look at the seretive world of doping - more than just drugs, anyone fancy catchin a train or having an extra coffee?
Ahhh.... the Campagnolo Delta brake, loved and maligned in the same sentance, in this video we take a close look at Deltas and Campagnolo`s brake lineup in that period plus are they really that hard to fit and do they actually work?
Winter - it just sucks for the outdoor cyclist, let alone one likes to wear vinatge kit - here we take a look at the best ways to layer up and avoid the worst of the weather - though don`t put tin foil in your shoes, it really goes wrong!
One of GCN`s most popular retro videos, Si wanted to put a real deal vintage climbing machine up against a current Dogma and went for our ex Mercatone Uno `98 Mega Pro team bike for the challenge - fair to say he loved it (and was blown away by the Campagnolo 9 speed Record groupset) - and Si really can`t wear a bandana to save his life!
Staight up, let me tell you that storm was full in - I hid in the car and pub as it was super bad - definatly not the weather for riding a historically important time trial bike - which was so fast Si had to back off as he was headed over 65kph on the flats with a tailwind... really hard to ride in any weather!
50 years of Dura Ace - Si takes a close look at the development of Dura Ace and rides the Yares 7-Eleven team bike, Lance era US Postal Trek and Cav`s Specialzed Venge...
Like me, Olly loves Dogmas and in this video he puts the two ex team Sky Bradley Wiggins Dogmas up against the latest F - and Brads F8 is quite a revalation...
To be fair, Pinarello have made some bold claims over the years regarding the development of the Dogma and Olly just couldn`t resist the chance to put three different Dogmas through a wind tunnel test (just a shame about the wide 44cm bars...).
